In today’s marketplace, it’s not enough to have a well-written resume and a list of great referrals; it’s essential for every job seeker to develop and actively monitor their online professional brand.

While a photo on your resume is still considered taboo, recruiters have come to expect a picture to accompany your online professional profiles. In fact, your LinkedIn profile is 40 percent more likely to get clicked on if it contains an image. Here at TheLadders, we also encourage our members to upload a profile picture.

This coming Saturday is a lesser-known holiday in the United States: Flag Day. The holiday commemorates the adoption of the American flag to represent our nation. Like me, many of you probably haven’t thought about our “Flag Birthday” since elementary school.

When you think about it, the American flag – or any national flag, for that matter – serves a symbol. It’s one of the many components that make up a country’s identity. As professionals, we also use many symbols to express our professional identity, better known as our personal brand. The most successful professionals carefully manage their brand across many different channels throughout their careers.

In the job search, you must be precise and concrete about your value and career goals, and shape an elevator pitch that reflects them. 

"Oh, I'm looking for anything," you might tell well-meaning friends who ask.

It's a problem.

Because in today's economy, no employer is looking for a "VP, Anything", or a “Director of Whatever Needs to Be Done."  They're looking for an experienced professional who can solve specific problems.

When you're thinking about moving jobs, you need to have a brief, pithy assertion of who you are and what you're qualified to do.  It's important that you be able to explain to an old colleague, or a new connection, in 30 seconds or less, what it is that you're looking for.

iQuit_first_screenDo you dream of quitting your job? While it can be tempting to craft a witty resignation text with an app like TheLadders’ new iPhone app, Quit Your Job, you don’t want to damage relationships that could lead to recommendations, references, or even job leads later in your career.

With this in mind, I’ve compiled three tips to help you submit your two weeks’ notice while preserving your personal brand at the company.

1. Don’t burn bridges.

Whether your experience at the company has been a dream or a personal nightmare, don’t burn bridges. It’s a small world, and you never know when your paths may cross with this organization and its employees again. During your final days in the office, act the part of the model employee. If you’ve given your notice, do what you can to ease the transition for those you’re leaving behind. This may include writing out processes you’ve developed or creating guidelines for your colleagues who will be covering your responsibilities until a replacement can be hired.
