Meet John Connolly, Software Engineer at TheLadders

JohnConnollyAt TheLadders, we know a company is only as good as the employees who build it, and we're proud to have a remarkable amount of talent in our SoHo office. We’d love for you to get to know some of the extraordinary team members who make TheLadders the premier mobile career network committed to finding the right person for the right job. So sit back, relax, and enjoy a few minutes with one of our own.

What do you do at TheLadders?

I'm a Software Engineer on the Platform team (aka Team Chaos Monkey). I help maintain the service infrastructure and worry about legacy code so you don't have to.

What made you decide to work at TheLadders after interviewing?

The awesome people I met. I get to work with some of the finest minds in the industry. We're challenged with solving interesting problems, and given enough latitude to choose the tools we see fit.

What’s your best work memory?

Sean (Principal Architect) and me running down a character encoding bug that had been in the wild at least 4 years. Ever see a question mark in a job or job seeker experience descriptions? We found where and why that was happening and helped stamp it out. It was some fun detective work, and something we managed to figure out over a lunchtime diversion.

What do you like about working here?

The open flow of ideas, and the strong (and growing!) engineering culture. Our weekly Technology Conclave has turned into a great tradition. The formal policy of professional growth is great too: TheLadders' dedication to training and learning is a perk I really appreciate.

What’s your favorite NYC neighborhood?

Aw man that's tough. It's seasonal for me. Probably the Rockaways in the summer.

Where did you grow up?

Babylon Village, Long Island, New York. 36 miles east as the crow flies.

When you were a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up?

Jim Morrison.

Which mobile app do you use the most?

That'd be fun to track. Either Reeder, Pocket, iSSH, or 2048.

It’s 8pm on a Tuesday. What are you doing?

Walking my dog, Tesla.

It’s 8pm on a Saturday. What are you doing?

Walking my dog, Tesla.

If you could have one superpower, what would it be?

To be really really really ridiculously good looking. Relevant: http://www.thisamericanlife.org/radio-archives/episode/178/superpowers?act=1#play

What’s your go-to joke?

An old one:

If you put a million monkeys at a million keyboards, one of them will eventually write a Java program.

The rest of them will write Perl programs.

Thanks John!
