Back in June, with the company’s 10-year anniversary on the horizon, CEO and Co-founder Alex Douzet and I reflected on how far we’ve come. Marc Cenedella started the company as a small, weekly email personally sent to a few subscribers. Ten years and many-million lines of code later, we’re distributing job matches and the most relevant job information to more than 6 million job seekers online, via email, on our mobile-optimized website and through our mobile app.
This conversation led us to a realization: we just released our native iOS app and saw that many of our employees did not have iPhones to use it. We, as a mobile-first job-matching and information service, need to be immersed in the technology that we’re expected to create, update, sell, promote, and troubleshoot with job seekers. It’s not just the product team who needs to understand the mobile platform and its unique nuances – it’s all of us. Our customer support team needs to translate the benefits and troubleshoot with our customer base; the PR team needs to communicate the app’s differentiation to the media; the B2B sales team needs to understand and communicate how the app improves the employer experience.
So it was decided. TheLadders would provide all of its employees with devices to better understand our customers’ needs across various mobile platforms. Every employee was given an iPad mini for on-the-go use, and many received an iPhone 5.
Our people work hard and we try and reward their dedication. We thank them with catered lunches (tacos this week!), summer happy hours, endless snacks, and tons of swag from TheLadders. These perks add some fun and camaraderie to the important and challenging work we do every day. But this freebie was different. Handing out iPads was much more than a small reward; it was a way to equip our people with the skills and knowledge they need to help our customers find the right person for the right job.
The decision to provide these devices to the company aligns with TheLadders’ hiring philosophy. We like to think we turn good engineers into great engineers. We have an extensive onboarding and training program. We send our people to conferences and trainings like Big Nerd Ranch. We find the best, most passionate technologists and geeks out there, and then equip them with skills and knowledge they need to be successful in our company and industry.
TheLadders is fully dedicated to mobilizing our products and services. We are assembling a first-class team of people using the best technology available to provide our job seekers and recruiters with the optimal online and mobile experience, and will continue to look toward the future in our pursuit to match the right person with the right job on the most relevant platform.
If you’d like to join us in our mission and are working in software development, data science, product management, user experience, information architecture or visual design, we want to talk to you!
