Unemployment data offer hints of next job report

Posted by TheLadders

August 28, 2012

Recruiter, UnemploymentFor the past few months the U.S. had seen a steady string of modestly supportive economic reports. But Bloomberg reports that, for the past two weeks now, the country has seen a rise in the number of applications for unemployment benefits.

Last week, the U.S. Department of Labor estimates that around 372,000 people filed for unemployment, up by 4,000 people from the week before, which itself was revised upward to 368,000 people.

The figure marks a major rise over projections, with a Bloomberg poll of 41 economists predicting a median decline to 365,000 applications.

The Wall Street Journal reports that the latest numbers suggest that the U.S. could be in store for another disappointing jobs report come the start of next month.

These estimates are still a good bit better than the unemployment numbers in July, when the country is estimated to have added a surprising 163,000 jobs, but even that number is fairly underwhelming when compared with the first few months in the year.

Analysts expect to see more than 100,000 jobs added in the month, though the ultimate number could actually be lower than last month.

Tan lines or deadlines? [Infographic]

Recruiters: our data shows that summer is the right time to sway great talent by taking initiative.

I have always been told the powerful and simple social science equation “perception = reality”. In the world of hunting for that perfect job or finding the perfect candidate for your opening, it indeed is a stark reality.

From our recent survey results displayed through this fun infographic, it was surprising to note that most job seekers felt that their job hunt was more difficult in the summertime. What is most interesting however, is that they felt the recruiter responsiveness was much less consistent. Although I understand that we are all taking vacations during the summer, this proves to be a very strong opportunity if you have impending deadlines on your roles. For the tech savvy recruiter that does not mind sending out the occasional email while hiking that gorgeous mountain trail in the Swiss Alps (if you get service), to the job seeker it can mean they are that one recruiter who actually is responsive and encouraging them to stay engaged. Summer is the time to sway great talent by taking initiative.
